Who is Colin Kaepernick?
I’m sure many of you already know about Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers quarterback has been making opposing defenses look silly since he took over the starting position for Alex Smith. Kaepernick won the starting job after filling in for the concussed Smith on a Monday Night matchup against the Bears, leading the 49ers to a 32-7 win. Kaepernick was 16 of 23 with 246 yards and no interceptions. The rest is history. We all saw him set the record for most rushing yards by a QB EVER in San Francsisco’s playoff victory over the Packers. We also saw him stay calm after being down 17-0 in the first quarter against the Falcons in the NFC Championship and leading a comeback victory. But where did he come from? And how did he get here?
Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee and was adopted by his current parents. He moved to Turlock, California for grade school and became a multi-sport star. Kaepernick was nominated for all-state honors in football, basketball, and baseball his senior year. Many believed he would go on to play baseball since he received multiple scholarship offers and was eventually drafted by the Cubs. But Kaepernick stuck to his dream, which was to play quarterback. The University of Nevada was the only school that offered him a chance to play quarterback, so he took that opportunity and ran with it. Kaepernick was twice named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) player of the year. In 2010, Kaepernick attended the Archie Manning passing Academy in which Andrew Luck was also in attendance. After the camp, former Stanford coach and current San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh asked Luck if there were any quarterbacks to keep an eye on. Luck told Harbaugh to watch Kaepernick. Coach Harbaugh fell in love with Kaepernick’s skill set and drafted him 36th overall in the 2011 draft, much higher than many anticipated. But the gamble paid off for both Harbaugh and Kaepernick, and now the young man is one game away from achieving every football player’s dream of winning the Super Bowl.
