1. Sean “Diddy” Combs
Net Worth: $580 Million
Diddy’s business ventures, along with his career as a rapper makes him the richest rapper on the planet. He has built his fortune chiefly through his clothing line Sean John, label Bad Boy Records and partnership with Cîroc vodka. According to The Financial Times, Diddy gets a 50-50 split of the profits on Cîroc sales. He helped brand Cîroc and increased its revenues 131% percent in the United States. Acting gigs, television shows and guest appearances also add to his net worth. He told Forbes in 1999: “I’m gonna be bigger than David Geffen.” Not quite there yet.
2. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter
Net Worth: $475 Million
American rapper and businessman Jay-Z has an estimated net worth of $475 million according to Forbes. Embodying the rags-to-riches rap dream, Jay-Z pulled himself up by his bootstraps as a youth to eventually become the reigning rapper of New York City and, in turn, a major-label executive following his short-lived retirement from music-making. Jay-Z sold Rocawear clothing label for $204 million in 2007, signed a 10-year $150 million Live Nation deal in 2008, holds stakes in the Brooklyn Nets, owns the 40/40 Club chain and is part owner of ad firm Translation. Jay-Z’s memoir Decoded hit bookstores in November 2010; his business-focused biography Empire State of Mind by Forbes’ Zack O’Malley Greenburg followed in March 2011. He married American R&B superstar Beyoncé Knowles on April 4, 2008. Jay-Z has sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide, while receiving thirteen Grammy Awards for his musical work and numerous additional nominations.
3. Andre “Dr. Dre” Young
Net Worth: $350 Million
Super Producer/Rapper, Dr. Dre has an estimated net worth of $350 million according to Forbes. He helped launch the careers of Snoop Dogg, Eminem and 50 Cent. He expanded his wealth with Aftermath record label, Beats headphone company and HP laptop line. On 11th August 2011, Dr. Dre reportedly sold 50% stake in his Beats Electronics headphone company to Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC for $310 million. Dr. Dre has been married to Nicole Threatt since 1996. More than any other rapper, Dr. Dre was responsible for moving away from the avant-noise and political stance of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions as well as the party vibes of old-school rap. Instead, Dr. Dre pioneered gangsta rap and his own variation of the sound, G-funk.
4. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson
Net Worth: $250 Million
American rapper, actor, entrepreneur, investor and executive producer, 50 Cent, has an estimated net worth of $250 million according to Forbes. 50 Cent endured substantial obstacles throughout his young yet remarkably dramatic life before becoming one of the most discussed figures in rap history. He has earned most his net worth through lucrative endorsement deals and millions in record sales. Ever since bursting onto the music scene with his debut album Get Rich or Die Trying he has sold over 21 million albums, founded label G-Unit records, launched G-Unit clothing company, invested in Glacéau Vitamin Water, featured in 50 Cent-themed videogames, written several books, owns SMS Audio headphones and has even acted in several movies with legends like Al Pacino and Robert Deniro. He also bought and renovated the 50,000 square foot mansion formerly owned by Mike Tyson for $4.1 million. Future billionaire? He told Forbes in 2008: “It’s probably going to take me 10 years.”
5. Bryan “Birdman” Williams
Net Worth: $150 Million
American rapper, entrepreneur, investor and executive producer, Birdman, has an estimated net worth of $150 million according to Forbes. Born Bryan Williams in New Orleans, Louisiana, he founded Cash Money Records with his brother Ronald “Slim” Williams in 1989. The multi-talented Birdman went multi-platinum as both an artist and a producer, helping craft albums for many huge artists including Lil Wayne and Juvenile. In 2000 Birdman was even nominated for 2 Grammies for his song #1 Stunna which he released with Mannie Fresh as part of the rap duo Big Tymers. Cash Money Records is the most commercially successful label in the history of Hip-Hop music with over 50 million records sold and annual revenues in excess of $100 million. By the time Birdman was 22 he had already amassed a net worth of $40 million. Eventually Cash Money signed a distribution deal with Universal Music which would net the company a minimum of $30 million before a single record was even printed. Birdman owns a $30 million condo in Miami. He claims that every 6 months he buys 100 new cars and gives away all the “old” ones. At any given time he is wearing millions of dollars worth of jewelry including a 15 carat black diamond ring with matching earrings and a $500,000 grill on his teeth. He personally lost 20 houses and 50 cars including 2 Maybachs and 4 Ferraris during hurricane Katrina. The Young Money lineup now includes artists: Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Mack Maine, Lil Twist, Lil Chuckee, Jae Millz, Gudda Gudda, Cory Gunz, Christina Milian, Bow Bow and several others.
6. Marshall “Eminem” Mathers III
Net Worth: $140 Million
American multi platinum selling rapper, record producer and actor, Eminem, has an estimated net worth of $140 million according to Forbes. He was the first white rapper since the Beastie Boys to garner both sales and critical respect, but his impact greatly exceeded this confining distinction. On sheer verbal skills, Eminem is one of the greatest MCs of all time — rapid, fluid, dexterous, unpredictable, and capable of pulling off long-form narratives as he delivers his rhymes — and thanks to his mentor Dr. Dre, he had the beats to match: thick, muscular loops that evoked the terror and paranoia Eminem’s music conjured. Under Web Entertainment, Eminem released his debut album, Infinite, in 1996. Infinite was followed by the 1997 release of The Slim Shady EP, which earned Eminem the attention of Dr. Dre, who executive-produced the major-label release of The Slim Shady LP. The album was an instant commercial and critical success, earning Eminem a Grammy for Best Rap Album. 2000 and 2002 saw the releases of The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, respectfully, both of these albums were successful, with The Marshall Mathers LP on record as the fastest selling Hip-Hop album in history. His album Recovery sold 5.7 million copies worldwide and earned him 10 Grammy nominations. Eminem has achieved twelve #1 singles worldwide, an Academy Award for Best Original Song, eight #1 albums on Billboard Top 200, and was named Artist of the Decade by Billboard Magazine in December 2009. Eminem is the most commercially successful recording artist of the 2000s with over 32 million albums sold. He doesn’t tour as much as most rappers and his outside business interests are limited (Super Bowl ads for Lipton and Chrysler), but his music alone is enough to blast him onto the 2013 Top 10 Richest Rappers list.
7. Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus Jr.
Net Worth: $120 Million
American rapper, record producer, marijuana activist, actor and entertainer, Snoop Dogg, has an estimated net worth of $120 million according to Forbes. The laid-back rapper followed in the footsteps of West Coast legends such as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Ice-T. He was raised in Long Beach, California and received his nickname Snoop from his parents due to his resemblance to Peanuts’ top canine. As the embodiment of ’90s gangsta rap, Snoop Dogg often blurred the lines between reality and fiction with lyrical “realism” and his distinctive vocal flow. Introduced to the gangsta rap world through Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg soon signed to Death Row Records and became one of the most influential West Coast rappers of all time. Snoop Dogg was arrested in August 1993 as an accomplice in the murder of Phillip Woldermarian. According to reports, Snoop Dogg’s bodyguard, McKinley Lee, shot Woldermarian as Snoop drove the vehicle. The two pleaded self-defense, claiming Woldermarian was stalking Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg was cleared of all charges in February 1996 with the help of his lawyer, Johnny Cochran (one of O.J. Simpson’s lawyers). The arrest certainly strengthened his myth, and also helped his debut 1993 album Doggystyle, which became his first album to enter the charts at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and sold 802,858 copies in the first week alone. Snoop Dogg branched out into acting with a cameo appearance in the stoner comedy Half Baked (1998) and has since been involved with film and television. Over a 20-year career, the rapper has distanced himself from violence to become a savvy pitchman and marketer but is still one of the few original gangstas still recording today.
8. O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson
Net Worth: $100 Million
American rapper, record producer, actor, screenwriter, film producer and director, Ice Cube, has an estimated net worth of $100 million according to Forbes. He began his career as a member of the Hip-Hop group C.I.A. and later joined N.W.A (Niggas With Attitudes). Ice Cube is noted as a proficient lyricist and storyteller and is regarded as a brutally honest rapper; his lyrics are often political as well as violent. Ice Cube has transformed himself from one of the founding members of gangsta rap to one of the most successful mainstream actors and producers in the world. After leaving N.W.A., Ice Cube sold millions of albums as a solo artist and began acting in films such as Boyz n the Hood, Three kings, Anaconda, Barbershop, All About The Benjamins, Friday, Are We There Yet?, XXX: State of the Union, First Sunday and many more. Ice Cube actually wrote the screenplay for Friday which went on to earn over $30 million worldwide and continue on with two successful sequels. He was ranked #8 on MTV’s list of the 10 Greatest MCs of All Time, while fellow rapper Snoop Dogg ranked Ice Cube as the greatest MC of all time.
9. Dwayne “Lil Wayne” Carter Jr.
Net Worth: $95 Million
American rapper, executive producer and music executive, Lil Wayne, has an estimated net worth of $95 million according to Forbes. He started his career at only 15-years-old with Cash Money Records rap group Hot Boys and soon debuted his solo album The Block Is Hot, which went double platinum and reached #3 on the Billboard charts. A game-changing artist and an impervious celebrity, Lil Wayne began his career as a near-novelty — a preteen delivering hardcore hip-hop — but through years of maturation and reinventing the mixtape game, he developed into a million-selling rapper with a massive body of work, one so inventive and cunning that it makes his famous claim of being the “best rapper alive” worth considering. Lil Wayne reportedly wrote his first song at age 8 and signed a record deal with Cash Money a year later. His fourth and fifth studio albums Tha Carter and Tha Carter II featured a more thorough sense of self, evident in his lyrical content. In 2005 he became the president of Cash Money Records and founded Young Money Entertainment (an imprint of Cash Money Records). Following the drop of his sixth studio album Tha Carter III in 2008 he was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, the most for any artist that year, while taking home four of the awards. Lil Wayne dropped his first Rock album entitled Rebirth February 2, 2010 and was named #2 on MTV’s list of Hottest MC’s In The Game right behind Brooklyn bred rapper Jay-Z. Jail didn’t slow him down one bit (he served 8 months in New York’s Riker’s Island on a gun charge). His album I Am Not A Human Being topped the charts shortly after its release, making Lil Wayne the first artist since Tupac Shakur to have a No. 1 album while incarcerated. Some call him the best rapper to ever live others say he’s self-destructive but whatever you believe Lil Wayne has become a legend in American music and will remain there, indefinitely.
10. Kanye “Yeezy” West
Net Worth: $90 Million
Kanye West is an American producer, rapper, fashion designer and actor who has a net worth of $90 million according to Forbes. He dropped out of college to pursue a musical career, producing tracks for artists such as Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Twista and many more. Kanye West released his debut album The College Dropout in 2002 and won the Best Rap Album award and overnight became a superstar. Kanye West creates his music with tongue-twisting raps, flamboyant personality and his distinct fashion sense sets him apart from most other rappers. In 2009 Kanye West debuted his own line of shoes that he designed for the luxury goods brand Louis Vuitton (worth $990). Apart from being a rapper Kanye West is also a famous producer, for which he rose to fame producing hits like Slow Jamz, All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Diamonds from Sierra Leone and Through the Wire while signed to Roc-A-Fella Records. With a net worth of $90 million he owns a few of the most luxurious homes around the world and has been to some of the most exotic places on earth.
