Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), known by his stage names Snoop Doggy Dogg, Snoop Dogg, and later Snoop Lion, is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, and actor. Snoop has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. His music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre. He collaborated on Dre‘s solo debut The Chronic (1992), and on the theme song to the feature film Deep Cover.
Snoop‘s debut album, Doggystyle, was released in 1993 under Death Row Records, debuting at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. Selling almost a million copies in the first week of its release, Doggystyle became certified 4× platinum in 1994 and spawned several hit singles, including “What’s My Name” and “Gin & Juice“. In 1994, Snoop released a soundtrack on Death Row Records for the short film Murder Was The Case, starring himself. His second album Tha Doggfather (1996), also debuted at No. 1 on both charts with “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” as the lead single. The album was certified 2× platinum in 1997.
Snoop Dogg teams up with DJ Drama for the second installment of his Thats My Work mixtape series. This time around he links up Erick Sermon, Method Man, Iza, Mac Lucci and his two sons as Tha Broadus Boyz to put together this 19 song street album. The project is a compilation of sorts that features new tracks by the West Coast legend and a few close cohorts. This includes his sons Cordé Broadus and Cordell Broadus (aka The Broadus Boyz).
Snoop Dogg has taken many persona’s upon himself throughout his musical career, and has affected music in many different ways. If he is Snoop Lion, DJ Snoopadelic, Snoop Doggy Dogg or just plain old pimpin’ Snoop Dogg, he has always had a large fan base and following. In recent years he has left that g-funk gangsta rap alone and focused on reggae or funk. But he has made a return for a second in the popular That’s My Work mixtape series.
That’s My Work 2 proved that he is still the Top Dogg at heart because he sounds like he is enjoying himself throughout the tape, and to have become a more chilled, reflective version of the Top Dogg. Both of these are important. It is important to stay in touch with his gangsta rap persona because it is the one that made him famous and gained the respect of many other artists and his fans, it was also that persona that helped him escape the gang-banging side of Long Beach. It is where he began in 1993 (the release of Doggystyle) which was undoubtedly one of the biggest hip-hop albums ever. However, he has also realized that he isn’t a young pup anymore and that he needs to stay relevant and interesting to his listeners. For these reasons he goes mostly solo for most of this 18 track mixtape, except for when he passes the blunt to Method Man, Eric Sermon, Suga Free, or his two sons, aka The Broadus Boyz.
