Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), known by his stage names Snoop Doggy Dogg, Snoop Dogg, and later Snoop Lion, is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, and actor. Snoop has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. His music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre. He collaborated on Dre‘s solo debut The Chronic (1992), and on the theme song to the feature film Deep Cover.
Snoop‘s debut album, Doggystyle, was released in 1993 under Death Row Records, debuting at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. Selling almost a million copies in the first week of its release, Doggystyle became certified 4× platinum in 1994 and spawned several hit singles, including “What’s My Name” and “Gin & Juice“. In 1994, Snoop released a soundtrack on Death Row Records for the short film Murder Was The Case, starring himself. His second album Tha Doggfather (1996), also debuted at No. 1 on both charts with “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” as the lead single. The album was certified 2× platinum in 1997.
To promote the upcoming album release of Snoop Dogg’s, Malice In Wonderland the label had put out a mixtape hosted by DJ Scream, DJ Whoo Kid and DJ Skee. The tape features a few selected tracks from the D.O. Double G himself along with appearances from Ice Cube, Nipsey Hussle, The Dream and Harvey Keitel. It includes the singles from the album as well as other dope material.
” ‘I Wanna Rock,’ this sh– right here is banging,” Snoop said of the tape’s title track. “It’s smoking. Produced by my homie Scoop DeVille. Snoop Dogg acting a fool on this one. It’s at about 100 spins already [on radio]. Then we have ‘Upside Down‘ — Snoop featuring Problem and Nipsey Hussle. Two west-side riders from the West Coast. They going hard in the yard, going hard in the paint, doing their thing. ‘The Cure,’ produced by Scoop DeVille. Whoo Kid, I know you love this one right here. It has that old-school, ‘if there’s a cure for this, I don’t want it, I don’t need it’ [vibe]. I’m finnin’ to take over with this I Wanna Rock mixtape.”
“I Wanna Rock” is the 3rd official single from American rapper, Snoop Dogg‘s 10th studio album, Malice n Wonderland. It was released digitally on iTunes on November 17, 2009, after the second single “That’s Tha Homie“. The song was produced by Scoop DeVille and mixed by Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg released it on a mixtape titled I Wanna Rock on November 23. The lines “Right about now” and “I wanna rock right now” as well as the beat are sampled from Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock‘s 1988 song “It Takes Two.” The main sample is from “Space Dust” by Galactic Force Band. The song features no production from Dr. Dre, but was mixed by him. The beat was produced by Scoop DeVille and was originally intended for Ryu from Styles of Beyond.
The official remix of “I Wanna Rock” features Jay-Z and is referred to as “The Kings’ G-Mix.” The music video was released to YouTube through Snoop Dogg‘s official channel on March 25, 2010. The video has Jay-Z‘s vocals but he is not physically in the video. Sometimes the Ludacris freestyle is added to the original or “The Kings’ G-Mix” on the radio as the remix. It features a vocal sample of “Microphone Fiend” by Eric B. & Rakim in the Snoop Dogg verse. It is the 1st track on the album’s re-release, entitled More Malice.
