Robert Williams (born May 6, 1987), better known by his stage name Meek Mill, is an American hip hop recording artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was briefly signed to Atlanta rapper T.I.‘s record label Grand Hustle and in February 2011 signed to Miami-based rapper Rick Ross‘ Maybach Music Group imprint.
After releasing several mixtapes early in his career, Meek Mill released his debut album Dreams and Nightmares in 2012, under Maybach Music Group and Warner Bros.. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, preceded by the singles “Amen“, “Burn” and “Young & Gettin’ It“.
Meek Mill, along with three of his friends, formed a rap group and called themselves The Bloodhoundz. The group lasted long enough to release four mixtapes. Meek Mill sharpened his rhyming skills alongside his rap group, Bloodhoundz, but quickly realized that belittling opponents generates YouTube clicks, but not airplay. The then-cornrowed wordsmith instead focused on hooks that could capture both the party scene and the streets. “Artists here have been groomed to be more aggressive. Nobody really has style,” said Mill’s longtime engineer Melvin “Rug” Carter, who’s worked with everyone from Eve to State Property. “As I watched him develop, I gave Meek the advice of slowing down and giving more conversation.”
Meek Mill is one of the few Philly artists who are on the right path to a greater success. After coming home from a small prison sentence, he began work on his third installment to his Flamers Series. The second one had a premature leak causing it to be released without DJ Drama. It definitely did not stop the two from linking up for Flamers 3. The sub-title for Flamers 3 is The Wait Is Over; a perfect fit to a long awaited project for his fans.
The first thing you’ll notice listening to Flamers 3 is that Meek Mill has a love for choruses that have a nice repetitive vibe. Take the Jahlil Beats produced “Rose Red” for example; the entire chorus goes, “I like my rose red and my diamonds blue”, but it’s got that nice banging club type beat that blends in with the chorus flawlessly. The same goes for “40 On My Hip” and even his Young Dro assisted “I’m Clean”. If your still looking for his super charged vicious bars then make sure you listen to “Wait Is Over”, where Meek Mill warns the haters to keep quiet now that he’s home, while adding colorful lines like, “I put my own city, make sure we all rich/ Open up the door and do it biggie on some smalls shit”. His crazy lyrics also spring out on “Swag Surfin’” and “Here We Go Again”.
Meek Mill adds some real thoughtful songs to this mixtape as well like the struggle turned success story with Gillie Da Kid on “Be Alright”. His short, street oriented “The Real” track ultimately shows his side of anger and hustling state of mind. Overall, Meek Mill created a diverse mixtape with many different concepts and flavors for all tastes. As always, DJ Drama’s ad-libs spice up the product. Out of Philly, Meek Mill has to be the most versatile artist throughout his Flamers mixtape series.
