Fill up your Styrofoam cups for Bruce Lean Chronicles, the first mixtape of The Bruce Lean Chronicles from Alabama rapper Jackie Chain. While some Hip Hop fans may not be used to artists from Alabama and more remote parts of the South like Mississippi, these two states have turned out several of Hip Hop’s top billed artists over the past decade, including but not limited to David Banner, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf, Tito Lopez, Tha Joker and Jackie Chain himself.
Jackie Chain is a native son to Huntsville, Alabama. Jackie Chain found his love for rap music at an early age, growing up in the trailer parks and listening to his favorite groups such as Eightball and MJG, UGK, 3-6 Mafia and Too Short. As early as 5th grade Jackie Chain had won local talent shows by displaying his unique ability to rap and win over a crowd. The fact that Jackie Chain is half Asian added to his reputation as people began to take notice of his talents. Jackie Chain lived a troubled childhood moving from home to home and state to state after his mother left him at the age of two (to this day he still has not spoken to her or even knows if she is alive and prefers it that way). At age 16 he was kicked out of his fathers house and turned to the streets. Within a month Jackie Chain had a 5 bedroom house with a pool and several cars, all this while still in high school.
One of the most respected acts on the underground scene down South is Jackie Chain, and he is for sure the top Asian rapper from down South. With a name like Jackie Chain it’s hard to forget it. He drops a creative mixtape to the masses with a clever title Bruce Lean Chronicles. The title looks to be an ode to his heritage as well as the popular drink of Southern Hip Hop culture. “It’s just the last couple CDs that I put out, man, have been more club orientated and on some dance and some getting f*cked up sh*t,” said Jackie Chain. “Bruce Lean is really more of what I’ve been going through in my life, man. I’m just really back on that trap sh*t, man, and it’s me going back to my original roots and more of a street album, on that selling dope and pimpin’ h**s and that sh*t that we do in the South, man.”
Jackie Chain is a rare artist who is as comfortable cracking wise as he is breaking down drug game or writing hooks one major label push away from mass radio and club consumption. In fact, with little to no support from Universal, Jackie Chain has managed to maintain a pretty solid buzz with rap blogs, including earning numerous honors as an artist to watch and accolades for his various mixtapes. While the story Jackie Chain relates in his songs is one that has been told repeatedly throughout the course of rap history, there is an important distinction between those who tell the story, and those who tell the story well.
“With the Bruce Lean Chronicles, I saved a lot of my features for the Chronicles 2, like, I got Bun B and Big K.R.I.T., but for my production on the Chronicles Vol. 1, I got production from MMG’s Beat Billionaire, I got production from Sonny Digital, Diplo and Burn One. So, I got so many different producers, and on my last one, I just used one producer for the whole CD. So I got street sh*t, as far as beats go; I got sh*t that people would have never thought they would hear me on, so I like the vibe that is on this CD.” said Jackie Chain.
Ultimately, it is Jackie Chain’s ability to cover a broader variety of subject matter that makes Bruce Lean Chronicles one of the best releases of 2012. His comfort moving from club joint to party song to conceptual track to hustler’s anthem to introspective piece shows a range and depth to his work that very few artists in are capable of delivering. Unlike many of the best releases that have come out this year, Bruce Lean Chronicles has almost as many producers as it does tracks, but the production nonetheless is seamless and the album is perfectly sequenced.
