The S.O.U.L. Tape 2 is the fifth mixtape by American rapper Fabolous, it was released on November 22, 2012. The mixtape features guest appearances from Broadway, J. Cole, Pusha T, Troy Ave, Trey Songz, Cassie, Wale, Joe Budden and Teyana Taylor. Fabolous hasn’t released a studio album since 2009 but has dropped four strong mixtapes in the three years since.
The mixtape was announced on October 22, 2012. On November 7, 2012, the first song was released in promotion of the mixtape titled “For The Love“. On December 12, 2012, the music video for “For The Love” was released. On December 30, 2012, the music video for “Life Is So Exciting” featuring Pusha T was released. Let’s be honest here. Fabolous has seen more relevant days than many other rappers. What his ultimate legacy paints itself as was addressed here not too long ago, and something he mentions on “Diamonds” as a gift (or curse) that’ll “live forever”. The Soul Tape 2 is important for the now though. Since 2008, the best projects Fabolous has afforded rap were the first There Is No Competition and last year’s The Soul Tape. His albums – some better than others – have never carved an undeniable crater in rap his true talent frequently paints on other canvases.
AllHipHop said “Fab’s favorite hook supplier, Lil Mo, is surely missed on songs like “Life Is So Exciting” and “Only Life I know”, which could be much better without Loso on hook duty. Perhaps Fab should put in an ad for a full-time singer for tracks like these, but in the meantime, features like Pusha T’s signature flow of balling out control on “Life Is So Exciting” is sure to hold fans over. If you were expecting Fab to really bare his soul on Soul Tape 2, you have to settle for a peek because Loso is just too laid back for that. He might not layout a scenario that can make you feel as though he might have been through the same challenges as you, but that doesn’t mean his slick schemes and sneaky punchlines can’t give you as much goosebumps and screw-faces as any Soul singer could.
The first two tracks are dope and gives hope that this will be a classic mixtape by the Brooklyn rapper, but then he segways into “Bite“, a lyrical ear-pleaser that is stuffed full of metaphors that will have the listeners brain racing to catch up. Fabolous goes solo on the next two tracks, letting us into his life, his recent struggles and successes, and allows the listener to see the rapper behind the smoke and mirrors (or the reality show and the cameras). The first six tracks are commendable, allowing Fabolous to showcase his skills on the mic; plus the witty wordplay and quick-fire rhymes he has within lines is to be admired.
Overall, The S.O.U.L. Tape 2 is a dope mixtape that has mistakes and negatives that every non-studio tape would encounter. Fabolous‘ skills are showcased brilliantly throughout the tape, reminding everyone how strong of an MC the Brooklyn-born rapper still is. Though the features are prominent and help the tape chug along, it’s Fabolous‘ solo tracks where he pours everything out when you really get hooked in and can’t stop listening. Clocking in at 12 tracks, the hope stands Brooklyn’s own delivers a focused and sharp project with the wittiness he’s flashed throughout his career on several instances. From there, the momentum leads to a solid LP.
While discussing the new tape, Fab explained “[It’s] different from some of the other music that I normally do or put out through my other releases. We kept the vibe and the music kind of soulful, sample-influenced. This one, I think I have a little bit more…”. Fabolous plans to release his sixth studio album, Loso’s Way 2: Rise to Power, sometime in 2013. Follow on Twitter @MyFabolousLife @MedievalBeatz Buy Beats Online
