In 2013 our flow should be developed and mixed with substance. We should be talking about something, not wasting any bars. The most important thing is substance.” Dizzy Wright was asked about recording with Wyclef and replied with: ”We didn’t go in no booth, he just had his microphone out. He was like, ‘I haven’t recorded with this microphone since The Fugees.’ I literally just rapped my verse into it, and he sang his shit and then I did another verse. It felt like some old school, some ’96 shit.”
La’Reonte Wright (born November 26, 1990) is an American rapper better known by his stage name Dizzy Wright. He is best known for being signed to Hopsin‘s record label Funk Volume. He released his debut studio album Smokeout Conversations in 2012.
Dizzy Wright was born in Flint, Michigan and grew up with his favorite rappers being Nas and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, which his “uncle” Layzie Bone is a member of. At the age of four he moved with his mom and siblings to Las Vegas, Nevada. He began rapping at just 8 years old with the group DaFuture which included his brother and a very close friend. His mother wrote his raps at the time and was a concert promoter so he was exposed to the music industry early even doing youth reporting at major awards shows like the BET Awards and interviewing Tyreese, St. Lunatics and Boyz II Men. He credits this for being the reason he wants to stay away from major record labels and stick to independent labels. In seventh grade Dizzy Wright lived in a homeless shelter with his family for five months. Throughout the rest of high school Dizzy Wright lived in Georgia and California before moving back to Las Vegas when he was in twelfth grade. Dizzy Wright took part and won the Sheikh Music “Rip the Mic” Competition in 2010 which impressed record label Funk Volume. He appeared on 106 & Park’s Wild Out Wednesday as “Dizzy D Flashy“ in 2010.
On March 11, 2013 Dizzy Wright released the first song from his upcoming mixtape, titled “Maintain” featuring fellow rapper Joey Bada$$. On March 26, 2013 it was announced that Dizzy Wright would be a part of the XXL Magazine 2013 Freshman Class due to getting the “Peoples Choice” vote. Three days later he would release the music video for a new song titled, “Still Movin“ which featured cameos from his Funk Volume label mates which was followed by “Killem Wit Kindness” a few days later. These songs were the second and third releases from his upcoming mixtape, which was shortly announced to be titled The Golden Age. Following the mixtape he plans to drop The Second Agreement EP and then his second studio album.
“The production is better [on The Golden Age]. The team of people around me have grown. The producers have learned from what we’ve done before and they’ve stepped it up. That puts me on a level to just talk that shit. It’s important to be you, to talk about the shit you know about, whatever that is, people should grow to be something better, not just an image. You are teaching other people. I believe in being a man and wanting to be better.” said Dizzy Wright.
Now is a critical time for Dizzy Wright after receiving the nod as one of XXL Magazine’s Freshman class of 2013. According to Dizzy Wright, this mixtape draws inspiration from the storytelling of the 90′s, hence the name. He also alludes to the tape showing growth and maturity as an artist in the year 2013.
