Covert Coup is the collaboration studio album by rapper Curren$y and producer The Alchemist. The album featured guest appearances from rappers Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Freddie Gibbs, Smoke DZA and Fiend and contains 10 songs. Covert Coup was created as a retail EP. Later, the artists decided to release it as a free digital album. It was still treated as a mixtape, however, since it was given away for free.
On April 7, 2011, the first single from Covert Coup titled “Ventilation” was leaked onto the internet. “Full Metal” was leaked on April 12. On April 15, the third single entitled “Scottie Pippen” featuring Freddie Gibbs, was leaked. The album was released by Curren$y on April 20, 2011 via his Twitter. It’s worth pointing out that the projects artwork depicts the fallen statue of Stalin in Budapest, Hungary during a protest against Communism in 1956.
“Obviously, I guess it would be redundant to say we were smoking weed, we made the music very high,” The Alchemist explained to MTV. “It definitely is the audio equivalent of that; you’ll definitely feel high after you listen to it. I had a lot of fun doing it, man. He ain’t really restricted with his music as far as how he created, he’s real loose, that’s how I like to be too.”
Covert Coup shows that Curren$y and Alchemist are a potent duo. Alchemist‘s soulful, murky soundbeds serve as perfect backdrops for Curren$y‘s elongated, smokey rhymes. Despite over half of the songs clocking in at less than three minutes, the mixtape still manages to maintain its vibe with Alchemist‘s cohesive production. Jet Life to the next life.
