Boy in Detention is the fourth official mixtape by American singer, songwriter, dancer and occasionally rapper Chris Brown. The mixtape was released as a free download on Brown‘s webpage and others. Breezy displays his versatility as not just a singer, but a rapper as well. Features come from the likes of Justin Bieber, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, Big Krit, K Mac & more.
Christopher Maurice ”Chris“ Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American recording artist, dancer, and actor. Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, Brown taught himself to sing and dance at a young age and was involved in his church choir and several local talent shows. In 2004, he signed with Jive Records, and released his self-titled debut album the following year. The album peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, and featured the hit single “Run It!“, which topped the Billboard Hot 100, making Brown the first male artist as a lead to have his debut single top the chart since Diddy in 1997. Chris Brown was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Unlike his previous studio albums, Boy In Detention is very short on romance. However, Brown is deeply motivated by no-strings attached lust, providing ample sex-inspired jams. On “Body On Mine” is all about the after-party. He has a tryst with a stripper on “Private Dancer”. Titles like “Leave The Club” and “Your Body” are pretty self-explanatory.
Boy In Detention is not short on star power either. He recruits 9th Wonder to produce the mixtape’s “Real Hip Hop Shit” track series. He boasts some more bedroom bravado on “Freaky I’m Iz”, alongside Kevin McCall, Diesel, and Swizz Beatz. Justin Bieber‘s flow on “Ladies Love Me”, produced by David Banner, shouldn’t be surprising, considering he already worked with Raekwon and Kanye West: “Swagging with a Crooked tee / Body slam the beat from DB / Call me Booker Tee / I said whoa there, whoa there baby…” proves that while Justin Bieber might have conquered Pop, Hip Hop will remain a challenge.
Just when it seemed like Brown chased his female audience away with all of his bad behavior, he sprinkles in the adorably female-friendly track “Sweetheart” The island flow will surely keep Team Breezy gushing with delight. The mixtape closes with “Yoko”, featuring Berner, and two of the more celebrated current emcees Wiz Khalifa and Big K.R.I.T.
It seems like rappers want to be singers, singers want to be rappers, and the rest want to be actors. On Boy In Detention, Chris Brown takes a stab at being a triple threat. Lack of content aside, it turns out that he’s not half bad at all three. In 2007, Brown founded the record label CBE (Chris Brown Entertainment), on Interscope Records. Brown has since signed Kevin McCall, rock diva Sabrina Antoinette, former RichGirl member Sevyn, rock group U.G.L.Y. (Barry Bradford (Mojo), Braxton Olita and Stormi Henley), and singer Joelle James. Chris Brown’s sixth studio album, currently titled Carpe Diem, is set to be released in 2013. Follow Twitter: @ChrisBrown @MedievalBeatz
