4evaNaDay (pronounced: Forever and a Day) is a mixtape by Mississippi rapper and producer Big K.R.I.T.. It was released for free digital download on March 5, 2012 under independent record label Cinematic Music Group. The mixtape was released in anticipation of K.R.I.T.‘s debut studio album Live from the Underground (2012). It was entirely produced, arranged and mixed by Big K.R.I.T., with assistance from Ralph Cacciurri, and contains 17 tracks with no vocal guest appearances. An extended play containing three songs from the mixtape (“Boobie Miles“, “Red Eye” & “Insomnia“), including two new songs, was released on iTunes on April 10, 2012. Upon its release, 4evaNaDay received positive feedback from music critics.
The first single “Boobie Miles“, track 4 on the mixtape, was released on February 1, 2012, over a month before the release of the mixtape. The music video was uploaded to VEVO on March 8, 2012. The mixtape was first announced in early December 2011, saying: “Based off the experience of touring in the past year I’m creating this free album from scratch as we speak. I have locked myself back in the studio – 4Eva & a Day coming soon on bigkrit.com“. The instrumental tape was released on August 13, 2013.
Hailing from Meridian, Mississippi, Big K.R.I.T. (King Remembered in Time) is one of hip-hop’s most promising young stars. He’s released several critically acclaimed mixtapes, including Hood Fame, The Last King, K.R.I.T. Was Here, and Return of 4Eva. 4eva N A Day has absolutely no guest rappers and no outside producers. It’s just K.R.I.T. doing his thing over his own beats, with high-caliber live instrumentation fleshing out the tunes. Exceptionally soulful and personal, his mellow, Southern-accented verses stick to real-life issues: love and loss, happiness and sorrow, and the dueling lifestyles of faith and temptation. Musically, he sounds like nobody else in the game right now, though comparisons could be drawn to old-school OutKast and Goodie Mob. Honestly, every song on here is fantastic, with standouts like “Boobie Miles,” “Sideline,” and “Red Eye.”
“I just wanted to do a sequel to Return of 4Eva. Instead of it being just a group of songs, I said, ‘Man, let me do something conceptual,’ ” said K.R.I.T. when asked of the motivation behind 4eva N A Day. “4Eva N a Day was pretty much a day in the life of as far as me,” Big K.R.I.T. said. “So I tried to put my whole life on wax, from the moment I wake up, real-life conversations with my father, my actual grandmother, there’s audio of her talking before a song. There’s people in my life that are actually on this tape.” “I took the last six months to work on this album and it all came down to 4eva Na Day,” said Big K.R.I.T. “Instead of visually documenting my day, I decided to put it on wax. This is what I go through on a daily. It’s the road less traveled.”
“Boobie Miles” is an inspirational hymn inspired by the Texas high school running back whose real-life story inspired the 1990 critically acclaimed book Friday Night Lights and the movie of the same name. On the track, Krizzle urges listeners to put God first, a spiritual theme that carries the tape throughout. The title track finds the self-proclaimed King Remembered in Time celebrating his relative victories in the face of haters. On “Handwriting,” Big K.R.I.T. vents about label woes, and on “Insomnia,” he seeks some sexual healing to help ease the stresses of his day. If you let K.R.I.T. tell it, the life of an up-and-coming rap star isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, but you also get the feeling that he wouldn’t have it any other way.
