Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975), better known by his stage name 50 Cent, is an American rapper, entrepreneur, investor, and actor from New York City, New York. He rose to fame with the release of his albums Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2003) and The Massacre (2005). His major-label debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’, has been certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). 50 Cent also gained prominence with East Coast hip hop group G-Unit, of which he is the leader.
Born in the South Jamaica neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens, Jackson began drug dealing at the age of 12 during the 1980s crack epidemic. After leaving drug dealing to pursue a rap career, he was shot at and struck by nine bullets during an incident in 2000. After releasing his album Guess Who’s Back? in 2002, 50 Cent was discovered by rapper Eminem and signed to Interscope Records, Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment. With the help of Eminem and Dr. Dre, who produced his first major commercial successes, 50 Cent became one of the world’s highest selling rappers. In 2003, he founded the record label G-Unit Records, which signed several successful rappers such as Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo.
War Angel LP is the 7th mixtape by New York rapper 50 Cent. It was released on June 16, 2009, via his community website Thisis50.com as a free download. On June 11, 2009, it was announced that 50 Cent was to digitally release new material over his community website. The rapper stated his new project entitled War Angel LP, would be more like a “street album” than a mixtape. 50 Cent also claimed that it would be the “best” underground project that he released to that date.
Dr. Dre, produced the single “Ok, Ya Right“, which was originally released several weeks prior as “Ok, You’re Right“. Robin Thicke, who previously contributed to 50 Cent‘s album Curtis, is featured on the track “Cocaine“. The track “Better Come On Your A Game” also features a background vocal sample from Alan Titchmarsh, a British gardening celebrity.
“This material, I felt it fits the summer,” 50 Cent said. “The whole vibe. I used the War Angel title for it [because] I read a comic book through Marvel Comics. [NOTE: Brian Pulido’s “War Angel” comic book series was originally published in 2005 by Avatar Press, not Marvel Comics.] The guy who created it, he’s done Nightmare on Elm Street and illustrations I’m familiar with. He created this concept: War Angel. God created these angels to create war. It’s necessary on some level. I took the concept. It’s kinda from the perspective I grew up under. “I didn’t want to write Angel Demon. It’s not the contrast between good and bad. But…if someone’s at war, I’m sure they’re saying their prayers. They believe they have angels around them. What would you call an angel around a soldier at war? That’s why I titled it that.” said 50 Cent.
“Creatively, this is not even a mixtape. That’s why I put LP next to it…My core audience will understand it immediately, and it’s written specifically for that…When you hear it, out of all the material I put on the street, you’re gonna say that’s the best body of work I put out in the mixtape circuit, period.” With a subtitle that is more than suggestive, “Prepare for Total Destruction,” War Angel comes to offer fans with of the edginess and the aggressiveness they have come to love in 50 Cent.
